Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD as it is commonly known is a form of anxiety that can develop following exposure to one or more traumatic events. Most people who experience a traumatic event will not develop PTSD. PTSD is distinguished from general anxiety by symptoms that include intrusive thoughts/flashbacks/dreams of the traumatic event(s) which are accompanied feelings of severe anxiety.

Individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD can respond extremely well to treatment. Treatment options include medication and psychotherapy. This Living with PTSD handout provides further information regarding PTSD and its treatment.
